The Last Judgment
The Last Judgment is believed to be when Jesus (or God - choose one) comes back to Earth to judge all the human soles. Michelangelo depicts a plethora of depictions on how he imagines the Last Judgment will look like. His most famous depiction of the Last Judgment is on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel in Rome. Many Florentines thought of the Last Judgment as being the end of time itself. Dante references the Last Judgment through his characters. Virgil likes to reference the Last Judgment in The Inferno when he talks about the resurrection of Ciacco at the "sound of angelic trumpet" (6.94-6). He is alluding to the Second Coming of Christ to the world. According to the belief of Dante's day, souls would be judged immediately after death and would then proceed either to hell or purgatory ; this judgment would be confirmed at the end of time, and all souls would then spend eternity either in hell or in heaven because Purgatory would cease to exist.
